HostGator vs iPage

Below is a comparison of HostGator (http://www.hostgator.com) and iPage (http://www.iPage.com)

Both HostGator and iPage have been in the business of web hosting for some time, and both have an excellent reputation in the industry. In fact, it might be hard to choose one of these stellar companies over the other for your own web hosting needs. However, when it comes to closely examining the features and service that comes with each web hosting package, the differences become more clear. We will take a look at both HostGator and iPage to see which company might be best equipped to meet the unique needs of your company.

Features and Pricing

HostGator offers a choice of three different packages; the Hatching, Baby and Business plans. The Hatching Plan offers a great value at just $4.95 a month, and plenty of freebies tacked on to the price. The business plan is available at $12.95 a month and comes fully loaded with everything you need to host your website at a single low price. On the other hand, iPage offers a single plan at just $3.50 a month. While the price is definitely right, it is beneficial to have a variety of plans to choose from if you want to customize your web hosting package to your specific business needs. It should also be noted that the $3.50 price may be a promotional offer that won't be around forever.

Reliability

All HostGator's web hosting plans come with a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Try as we might, we could not find this same guarantee on the iPage website. In fact, we didn’t find much about reliability from this company period. Both of these companies offer environmentally friendly solutions to web hosting, such as the use of wind energy. This energy source is used by a handful of web hosting companies today, and we believe it is a good option to help you run your company efficiently without leaving a carbon footprint behind. However, we would like to hear more about what iPage does to guarantee reliability of its hosting services as well.

Support

Customer support is a very important feature to any web hosting services, since systems can go down any time of the day or night. You want technical support that will be available 24/'7/365, with a variety of contact options to make it as easy as possible to connect with help when you need it. Both HostGator and iPage offer round-the-clock support with live chat, email and phone options. HostGator has actually won awards for its quality of service, and many customers have voiced their delight with HostGator's support through a myriad of review websites.

General Aspects

Both of the companies are good choices for web hosting, with green energy choices, round-the-clock support and ample features to fit any business needs. However, we prefer the variety offered by HostGator, because it offers the easiest way to customize your web hosting package to your specific business needs. Although iPage appears to offer the lower monthly charge at this time, the promotional nature of the price leads us to wonder if that amount won't go up in the not so distant future. While most businesses would be happy with either HostGator or iPage, we tend to recommend HostGator more often, due to its reputation, uptime guarantee and variety of hosting packages available.
